ACT 0 - PROLOGUE

"Run!" I ran as quickly as I could too scared to look back. I rushed down the stairs at the end of the hallway. Their screams echoed in my head, reaching out for me, reminding me, that this wasn't a game. One bite from these things, and I would be done fore. I heard my friend turn into one of those things as I reached the doors out of the school building. As I pushed the doors open, I gazed out onto the school. The setting sun almost blinded me.

"Forget about me! Just run!" repeated in my head as I stood there in the door opening, tightening my grip at the bat I was holding in my hand. It was bloody from the unavoidable encounters with those creatures. I sprinted off out towards the school gate, hoping that the entrance would be clear of them, so I could make my escape. If I knew it would have come to this, I wouldn’t have wasted too much time in the school building, trying to defend the others, and myself from them. I should have known that they would just keep coming, eventually overwhelming whomever hid inside. I should have listened to her, taken her advice, and left with her. But I didn’t, because I’m too stubborn and selfish. At any rate, it was too late now.

I reached the gates, trying to catch my breath while I quickly looked around my surroundings. Then left as fast as I could out the front gates without a second thought.

It wasn’t long before my pursuers had lost sight of me, but I guess I was lucky. These things aren’t so manoeuvrable while they attempt running down stairs, or so I had noticed. Most of them had already lost sight of me before I even reached the school gates when I flew down the stairs inside the building. And luckily this school had stairs in front of the school gates, which were fairly long. From there I managed to get away and onto a small sidewalk, which I followed. It was the same way I usually took home, but today, was a bit different in my book. Hoping to reach safety before it got dark, I picked up the pace and started running, trying to avoid making too much sound, as it would undoubtedly alert those things of my presents if there were any nearby.

ACT 1 - THE DEAD RISE??

School.. Just a usual boring school day, I was half asleep on my desk when the speaker almost gave me a heart attack. “All students and personal are to evacuate the premises right now! A violent group of individuals have entered the school grounds and are causing problems for our staff as well as students. Those who do not follow these instructions and stay inside the school grounds will be dismissed from school immediately, without warning, or chance of redoing this year!” Everyone got up from their chairs while I looked confusingly around the room as it quickly emptied itself. Only a few students remained, while the teacher stood in the doorway. “You too Miles.” the teacher said, as Miles stood at his desk, listening to what sounded like a struggle happening through the speakers. “Something isn’t right here.” Miles said, as he turned to me. “No, stop!, Don’t kill me! I beg of you please do not kill me!!” A loud scream followed by a short continues struggle were broadcasted through the speakers, before the signal went silent, only leaving background static echoing through out the entire school. The fact that the incredible funny broadcaster was just killed were shocking enough, but what came after were even worse. We stood, looking at each other, while Kim, a female student in our class, and her best friend Matilda, were hugging each other, too scared to even scream as they undoubtedly knew something bad were to come next.

A sudden moaning came from the speakers, not a scream or cries for help, but moaning, as in a really scary horror movie, digging right through our protective layers of our sanity, scaring the shit out of us. By hearing this, The two girls sprinted to the hallway, and disappeared before we could even reach to their actions. The teacher was long gone though, before we even bothered to look after him for answers.

“Let’s get the hell out of here!” Miles said, as he got up to the board and found the mop in the closet.

“What’s that fore?” I asked curiously as I approached him. “Weren’t you listening just now? Someone just died man!” With a quick twist at the end of the mop, he broke the head off it, only leaving the staff itself in his hands. “Oh, right, I get it.” I said. Wondering why I didn’t even figure that one out before I asked.

We headed out through the door onto the hallway. People were gathered in the hallway further down, trying to get out. Some were screaming for others to move, others were just making their way down, not caring about the others, pushing others aside or onto the ground. As they fell, human beings became a human carpets for others to simply walk onto. As one fell or were pushed aside, another simply took their place as they passed ahead. The survival instinct had kicked into their veins, and they were no longer who they normally was. All that mattered were their survival.

“That way is a no go.” Miles said. I noticed the two girls in the crowd, they were the last once to go down the stairs when they would reach that far. They noticed us come out. “Boys over here, it’s not safe in here, we have to get out!”. Miles broke in before I was able to respond. “Not a chance, you’re all going to be trapped if you stay in that crowd, we don’t know who we’re dealing with here, it could be some fanatics, or some terrorist attack, or to simply put it, insane people, just wanting to slaughter people! It’s much safer to find a place to hide and barricade ourselves in until we can get help!” I looked back and forth between the two parties, attempting to make up my mind. It was a though decision but I had to make one. I eventually left the girls to their own decision, and followed Miles down the hallway, away from the stairs down. “No, Wait, Come back it isn‘t safe!” Kim yelled down towards us. I looked back briefly before turning the corner. “Don’t worry, we’ll be okay, we‘ll find you!” I shouted, before I lost eye contact with her worried face, and her desperate hand, reaching out for us.

“We need a weapon for you man.” Miles said, as he looked over his shoulders. “I think I have my baseball bat in my locker, we should go get it.”. He nodded agreeably. “But that would require us to go down the way the others are right now, if we do that we’ll be stock, just like them.” He said, and looked into a passing classroom to see if anyone was there.

A sudden scratching sound came from the broadcasting room. We had, by accident, walked straight towards it, and were now next to the door in. The noise was caused by a chair being moved across the floor. Miles indicated to be quiet. The moment he did that I realised what he was about to do, I desperately tried to avoid him from going in there, but before I was even able to signal him not to, he was already on his way in. The door slammed into the wall as he dove into the room, staff ready, to hit whomever were in there. I took cover behind the wall, so whomever might be in there, wouldn’t notice me. If this was a terrorist attack, they might even have firearms on them, and I would really want to avoid getting shot to death, if I could prevent that from happening. There were silence from the room, a bit too quiet to my taste. At least, if it was clear I would have assumed he would say something. I peaked around the corner of the door frame, and into the room, just far enough to see Miles being attacked and forced out through the open door and back onto the hallway I was standing in. I only just barely managed to evade Miles back, from striking my head, as I pulled away from the opening, standing flat up against the wall, as I saw a shadow, forcing Miles down on the floor in the middle of the hallway, and landed on top of him. The man on top of him, was the insanely funny broadcaster. His neck had bite marks all over, and he seemed extremely aggressive, and gave away a violent scream of aggression. “Shit!” Miles shouted out.

I suddenly reacted without thinking, I kicked the broadcaster off Miles, so Miles were able to get back up on his feet. The staff was now pointed directly at this guy, who had apparently gone mad. He seemed to be the only one here, so he might have set this up just to mess the entire school up for a day. Either way, he wasn’t afraid of attack school students. And what the hell did he even do with that neck of his, are those real bite marks? If so, someone here did it to him, and that person is still here. The broadcaster sprinted against Miles, totally ignoring the staff, which pierced right through his chest on impact. Miles stood lifeless, unable to predict the outcome. “Why didn’t he stop?” he said, as his voice were shaking, as he turned his head towards me with a pale expression on his face. The man was impaled onto the staff, and blood started to flow out onto the floor. Miles dropped the staff as the weight from the body loosing its balance onto the staff and the amount of blood being spilled onto the floor became too much for him. “Shit, shit, shit!, I just killed a man!” he then said and stood up against a wall with his head first, resting his arms up along the wall next to his face, folding his fingers behind his head at the same time. “You did it in self defence, there is no way this man was sane any longer, just look at how aggressive he were! You knew him, he was funny as hell, and wouldn’t hurt a fly if he had to.”. Miles calmed down a bit. “Year, you’re right… you’re right.” He looked on the floor at the corpse of the dead broadcaster, floating in his own blood. I picked up his staff and handed it to him. “Let’s go,-” I was interrupted by something that caught my eye from inside the broadcasting room. I walked inside, and at the far end of the room, another dead corpse were laying on the floor. The corpse were missing most of its face. The flesh had been ripped off, almost as if it was bitten off. The corpse were wearing a School Uniform, so at least one student had lost their lives to this psycho’s twisted game, and his companions. “Disgusting.” Miles said behind me. “He was eating at this poor girls body, but before I was able to realise what he was doing, he attacked me, almost biting me too.”. The girls arm suddenly twitched, and she rose up, sitting idly by, apparently not aware of the situation she might have just been in. She then suddenly, chromed together in pain. “Help Me!!” she shouted, “It Hurts!!! Please no more!!!”. I rushed over, and supported her all I could. “Relax, everything will be alright, the psycho is gone,-” She opened her eyes and looked into mine. She seemed to relax as she heard that he wasn’t there anymore. We tried to avoid her from touching her face.. If she knew how bad it was, she would most likely be traumatised for the rest of her life. She told us that she heard the broadcast, and was nearby. By the time she was there, he was the only one there, He had been bitten by someone. When she was just about to leave for some medical supplies to help him with, he lost consciousness. She told us that she seriously felt that his pulse was gone, but he then suddenly attacked her without warning. I was just about to respond to what she told us, saying we need to have her looked at and that we would help her. But we didn’t have the luxury of such a noble action, as someone came running from down the hall where the others had been at. I and Miles walked out onto the hallway to check what was going on. The person looked in several directions, until the individual apparently saw us, and took a sprint for it towards us. It was only when the person was less than a hundred meters from us that we realised that this person wasn’t sane either. This time, it was a school student from our school who had lost it. He broke out into the scariest scream I’ve ever heard, and right then, at least more than fifty more came sprinting around the corner, all students, every single one, all of them heading in our direction. Miles and I didn’t even have to think twice about what to do next. We ran. We ran as fast as we could. The girl which had been bitten half to death managed to get out of the room and run towards us in our direction, maybe the scream itself work her survival instinct up.

“Lets go down and get that bat and get the hell out of here!” I shouted as we pushed ourselves towards the other stairs on the opposite side of where our lockers were located. We needed to cross the yard to get my bat, which I used for our baseball tournaments, it was wooden bat, very effective, and have given me a lot of good shots.

We got downstairs, the floor was filled with blood, but the place seemed empty. The crazed students came running, but seemed to fail to move down stairs without loosing their balance. They all feel on top of each other, as they kept coming. We took the chance to get away while we could. We ran out the door, and headed towards the other entrance, which had our lockers.

We managed to get safely inside, amazingly none of them were to be seen outside the building for one reason or another.

I opened my locker, and found my bat. “Now equipped with a weapon, we should head out.” I said thrilled. Miles didn’t look too happy. “What’s wrong?” I asked. “There is something I need to confirm before we leave.” He responded back. “And what’s that?” I asked back, curious. “Didn’t you even once think about why these people are doing what they’re doing, why they've become insane? Look around you, they seem like dead people aren‘t I right?” I looked at him briefly. “Yeah, sure, but dead corpses can’t walk around on their own, so that theory is already shut down. Besides, this isn’t the place, nor the time to do scientific studies of our former classmates!” I paused briefly looking away from Miles while scratching my neck. “I do admit that it does seem as if they‘re walking corpses though, but it‘s just not possible… scientifically, that is.” We both looked at each other briefly, and then nodded. “Okay, whatever you want to test, lets do it quick then.. But don’t fucking die on me here!” Miles smiled back, “I won’t, nor do you die on me man, I wouldn’t want to break the bad news to your parents, nor to Kim, she’d be heart broken.” As he mentioned her name I felt lost, worse than how I felt a second ago, however I should ever be able to describe how it would feel like to be cased after by flesh eating corpses, or whatever those crazed students had become. As Miles had said her name, I was immediately Reminded of her worried face. Her desperate attempt to reach out for me with her hand, as I disappeared around the corner earlier this morning didn't help on my consciousness. I guess, that is even worse a thought than the thought of being eaten by those insane people. How I was even able to come to that conclusion.

He caught what I was feeling, and responded right away. “I’m sorry, I didn’t…” I looked up at him responding back immediately. “Don’t worry about it, it’s not your fault that all this is happening.” I paused, tightening my grip on my bat and then said. “Okay, let’s go!”. We headed off to test whatever he wanted. I soon learned that he wanted to know what they really were. And we were soon to find out that these people, these former students and teachers, were no longer… human, in the sense that they didn’t have any emotions, other than a extreme taste for violence, and an incredible increased strength. Pain or other basic human behaviour were long gone. All that remained was their will to survive. Feeding themselves seemed to be a priority. But we found the answers we were looking fore when, the girl from before came sprinting down the hall, screaming as insanely, as the others. She had turned into one of them, She was full of rage, and caught Miles off guard, as we both thought she was still human. She managed to bite Miles, while we tried to defend her, or so we thought we were doing. But we were fooled. We ran all we could after having beaten several of these insane people down including her. Why we attacked and just didn’t leave right away was a mystery, for both of us, but I assume we wanted to know a bit more of what was going on, than being left out in the dark. All this was just too crazy to be some normal incident, after all.

The horde of crazed students finally caught up with us, and with Miles wounds we wouldn’t make it.

Miles stopped, and leaned against the wall, turning to me, shouting to me to run along, as he would hold them back. “But!” I shouted back with an immediate response. “Run!” he then shouted back, quickly continuing his sentence. "Forget about me! Just run!". He pointed the staff against the incoming horde while I took a few steps backwards and ran as quickly as I could, too scared to look back. I rushed down the stairs at the end of the hallway. Their screams echoed in my head, reaching out for me, reminding me, that this wasn't a game. One bite from these things, and I would be done fore, just like that girl, just like Miles. Even if I didn’t let him play hero. “Damn it, that idiot!” I thought, as I tightening my grip on my bat. I took off towards the gate, hoping not to meet anymore of those things on the way. Luckily, there were none, and I was able to escape, loosing the last once behind me, while running down the stairs outside the gates.

I was only a few kilometres from my house, I hoped everyone was okay. I continued in a quick pace towards my home, hoping to find everyone safe and sound.

ACT 2 - THE AFTERMATH

My eyes sprung open. A loud banging came from the front door. “Did I oversee someone last night?” I thought to myself. I got out of the bed I had been sleeping in, for as much as possible without holding myself awake, in the fear of a scenario of the house being attacked. And now, it seems to be the time it will. The slamming on the door continued.

I peaked out the window, making sure I didn’t show my face. At the front door was a person, slamming the door with both hands onto the door.

Then the person shouted out. “Please, Help me, is anyone in there?!” It struck me like lightning from the skies. A survivor, a person who wasn’t crazy or dead. “Be quiet!” I shouted as quietly as I possibly could while still putting enough energy into the shout, for her to hear me at the front door. She noticed me in the window and smiled in relief. Suddenly countless of infected jumped her from out of no where, and her body was torn apart in front of my eyes. My eyes bursted into tears, when I suddenly woke up, startled, attempting to regain my breath. It was dark outside. I exhaled in relief. “phew, just a nightmare.” I looked next to me and up on the bed, the girl I rescued this morning was sleeping like a stone. If I hadn’t checked this house out after leaving my parents house, she would probably have been dead by now for sure. I smiled again in relief that she was safe and sound.

I looked out the window, trying not to disturb the girls sleep. It was insanely quiet outside. There weren’t a single sound of life, and even though this simply meant there were no one around, it still made me want to piss my pants. Looking at the girl again to focus on something more pleasant, I noticed that even she had a hard time sleeping, without dreaming about those things out there. Her facial expression gave it all away. Although I felt sorry for her dreaming badly, I didn’t want to disturb her sleep. I knew how hard it would be to fall asleep again, knowing what is really happening right here, right now, out there, somewhere. I crouched down from the bed again, and dove down into my sandbag again, hoping, to at least get some sleep before morning.

I woke up, with a sudden surprise. The girl which I had only just met yesterday morning had moved from the bed, and down into my sandbag. The wide visibility to the balcony and then the street most have been too much for her. Her arms were both resting around my neck, and her face was rather close to not thinking any dirty thoughts. But I knew that this was probably not the best time to think about banging a stranger in a strangers house, while those things were out there, lurking. It would have to happen at a much safer place at least, or so that’s how I felt about it anyway. It’s not much of a turn on, if cannibals eating humans and walking corpses or whatever they are, start popping into my head during the act, now would it?

Now that I think about it.. Where did she come from anyway? She seemed to be at least my age, but she wasn’t warrying a school uniform when she got here. Maybe she took the day off when this happened. Lucky her I guess. She’s alive, while others aren’t.

I crawled out of the sandbag hoping not to wake her up. I stared at her for a short period, when something out on the street through the window caught my eye. I turned my head and froze in fear. Countless of the insane or dead people, whatever they were, were standing right outside in front of the house, lurking through the windows, painting the house and the windows with their blood of their victims, and with the blood of themselves. The girl got up behind me, just as terrified by the sight she saw outside. Their moaning was suddenly the only thing we both heard in our heads, while we were standing there, paralysed. The orange color of the sun dove through the crowd of the infected, given us a sense of how large a crowd was standing out there. The information didn't help us recover from our shock at all. We both just stood there, staring.
